Artist Statement
Helios
Helios was the sun god in Greek mythology, and a perfect name for this print, which came from my life-long fascination with cosmology. The coloration and forms of the sun as captured by x-ray solar photography served as reference and inspiration for this piece.
In a review of my artwork at EmptyEasel, Dan writes about this piece, "If we could physically see into the extreme range of light and heat that makes up a supernova, I imagine we'd find ourselves looking at something like that... a barely contained sphere of curling, lashing, lines of white-hot fire." Helios has been exhibited in galleries and exhibitions in the United States, Russia, and the Netherlands.
About the Series
Have you ever seen a pendulum swinging over a pit of sand, tracing patterns as it moves? The results can be simple or complex, depending on the forces generating the motion. In a truly chaotic system, a strange attractor represents this final state, and can be visualized using surprisingly simple mathematical equations. Initially inspired by Clifford Pickover’s Chaos in Wonderland, I have been experimenting with chaotic attractors since 2001. I call this series Aesthetic Explorations of Attractor Space.
